Certificates of recognition are given four (4) times a year to residents who have
personally developed landscapes that enhance a season of the year
and are easily seen from the street.
The Green Thumb Awards Committee peruses the city streets
keeping an eye out for those yards that meets these criteria.
We place a large blue-ribbon sign, in their yard that gives appropriate recognition for their hard work.
Club members attend the certificate presentation followed by a short owner-guided tour.
2022 Summer Green Thumb Award
The Green Thumb Committee is proud to announce
the garden tour of our Summer Green Thumb Award winner.
We have chosen the beautiful garden of John Yano.
Mr Yano, who has recently retired and has been commuting
back and forth from his previous residence in Hawaii,
has worked for the past three years to renovate the garden of the
previous owner, Beverly Mingram, who still lives locally.
She had incorporated elements of Japanese garden style
including an authentic Japanese teahouse in the backyard.
John has also included carefully placed local rocks
and has begun trimming some of his trees using the
painstaking Japanese technique of cloud-pruning (Niwaki).
As he progresses in his renovation, he periodically invites
Ms Mingram over to delight in what he has
accomplished so far. He is a deserving winner
and so enthusiastic about showing us his garden.
