The Community Donations Committee (Dee Sudduth, Wendy Rae Johnson and Emily Murphy) met March 4th to discuss where to bestow the remaining $1,000 in our 2023-2024 budget in the absence of member requests.
We started by reviewing the history of past Committee donations (2012 - 2023). We quickly zeroed in on The Answer for Youth (TAFY) and its Sprouting Hope Greenhouse as fitting the NGC's mission to 'promote the love of gardening...and civic and environmental responsibility'. TAFY had previously been selected in 2017 for a donation from the Community Donations Committee and our club has continued to have a relationship with them - donating leftover plants from sales, and collecting clothes, etc for the services they provide clients.
Dee and I met with Susan Hillgren and Wayne, the Greenhouse manager, last Wednesday to tour the operation. They are actively in the process of planting hundreds of hanging baskets, a significant annual fundraiser. We were so impressed by Wayne's plant knowledge and Susan's energy, all in the service of being able to provide aid and comfort to the less fortunate of our community.
