PRESIDENT’S THEME
Garden Like a Child
“Every child is born a naturalist. His eyes are, by nature, open to the glories of the stars, the beauty of the flowers, and the mystery of life.” R. Search
Can we remember how to garden like a child? Let’s give it a try. When PAGC sets a goal, we do what it takes to reach it. I looked back through our goals and accomplishments from 2014-2019. We wanted to increase our membership, raise more money for scholarships, and continue to contribute to our community. It doesn’t take too much looking around to see that we exuberantly reached those goals.
Let’s continue to shine. We can maintain those accomplishments and even more. The National Garden Club’s and the Port Angeles Garden Club’s Statement of Purpose says that through our many projects and varied programs, our aim is to promote the love of gardening through the study of horticulture, landscape and floral design and educate ourselves about conserving our environment. The Conservation Pledge says that we will promote education to become caretakers of our natural resources. Those goals are pretty clear. I’d like to add that we do it all with the joy and wonder of a child. Let’s be leaders, let’s teach by doing, let’s play in the dirt.
Our club grows and changes every year. We metamorphose just like many of the insects in our gardens. Things won’t all be the same as last year even if we really liked the way it was. Some changes are due to those on the national or state level. Other changes are because our many talented, dedicated members who have been leading us for several years have decided they want other members to bring their talents and views into the club. Good leaders give others a chance to lead. We will all need to be open and encouraging to these folks who are taking on new responsibilities.
We can get bogged down by all the things that are wrong in the world, in politics, in our club, or in our gardens. As the saying goes, we can complain that the rose has thorns, or we can rejoice that the thorns have roses.
Thank you for trusting me to be your president this year. I hope we can all remember how it felt to garden like a child.
