Port Angeles Garden Club President, Sally Shunn (far right) presents homeowners Sandy and Virgil Goodman with the Autumn 2018 Green Thumb Award along with a gift certificate to the Airport Gardens nursery
The Port Angeles Garden Club announced Sandy and Virgil Goodman as the winners of their Autumn Green Thumb Award for their beautifully landscaped yard at 2130 West 7th Street in Port Angeles.
Sandy originally caught the gardening bug from her grandfather and went on to achieve a degree in Environmental Horticulture. Virgil’s specialty is growing bonsai specimens, an art he learned from a neighbor in Hawaii when stationed there in the military. Together, they owned and operated a nursery in California.
When they moved to Port Angeles from Oregon, four years ago, they brought with them a truckload of starts and seedlings with which they transformed an untamed jungle into an artfully designed landscape.
Their efforts were recognized by the PAGC for the wonderful Fall display of bonsais, Japanese maples, and other assorted shrubs, along with a colorful border of still-blooming nasturtiums. Club members were also treated to a tour of their delightful studio where Sandy is a skilled painter and Virgil sculpts in metal and wood.
The Port Angeles Garden Club selects an outstanding residential garden for each of the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons. To be considered, the Garden must be planted and maintained by the homeowner rather than by a professional landscaper.
